What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease in which the airways (breathing tubes) in the lungs become inflamed, narrowed and obstructed, causing breathing difficulty.

Asthma is very common worldwide, affecting people of all ages, race and gender. Asthma is not contagious but can be inherited. Untreated asthma may cause permanent damage to the lungs and can be fatal.

In Singapore, about 5% of adults and 20% of children have asthma.
