Useful Tips

Travelling

It takes good planning and preparation to have a fun-filled and enjoyable travel experience for you and your child. Remember these tips:

  • Ensure that your child is well and fit to travel.

  • Have your child checked by your doctor several weeks before travelling. This gives you the assurance that your child’s asthma is under control with the current medication.

  • Have your child's medication with you in your hand luggage.

  • Make sure you bring more than enough medication for the entire trip.

  • Be alert to identify impending asthma attacks and know how to handle an asthma attack.

  • Note down the name and telephone number of the nearest doctor and hospital when you arrive at your destination.

  • Space out your itinerary or activities so you do not tire or stress yourself and your child during the trip.

Exercise

For fear of Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA), some parents are reluctant to allow their asthmatic child to take part in sports or physical education in school. While it is true that certain physical activities e.g. long-distance running, are known to trigger off EIA, there are other activities and sports that are recommended for asthmatics e.g. swimming, baseball, short-distance track and field.

  • Encourage your child to keep fit. Doctors often advise a dose of medication before an exercise session.

  • Ensure that your child's caregiver and teacher is informed about your child's condition, management plan and emergency measures. Awareness and know-how will increase the confidence of caregivers and teachers to help create a supportive environment for your child away from home.
