Precautions To Take
Your blood glucose can go out of control when you are
ill, stressed or injured. But you must continue to stick
to your given plan.
Observe the following :
Take your insulin or medicines
as usual until you visit the doctor. Your
blood glucose level is likely to be higher when
you are ill even though you are not eating well. |
| |
Visit your doctor as
soon as possible. Do not take extra
medicines on your own. |
| |
Eat your normal meals.
If you have no appetite, eat at least the
carbohydrate portion of your meals (rice,
porridge, noodles, fruit juice, etc). |
| |
Drink more fluids,
at least 8 glasses of water spread over the
day. |
| |
Rest in bed, but never
sleep without taking meal or your medicines,
or you might slip into a coma. |
| |
Continue
checking your blood glucose often
to make sure your blood glucose is under control.
Type 1 diabetics should check their blood
glucose level every 4 hours.
Type 2 diabetics should check 4 times a day
– before each meal and at bedtime. |
| |
Check your urine for ketones. Ketones is a chemical which is produced when the body is unable to use glucose and starts burning fatty acids in the body quickly. It is poisonous in large amounts in the body. |
