For the caregiver

Taking care of a loved one with a stroke can be challenging. Here are some tips:

  • Make the home a safe place. As stroke survivors often have problems moving around, take precautions to prevent falls e.g. use non-slip mats and install grab bars in the bathrooms

  • Make dressing easier, for example, choose clothes with buttons in the front and pants and shoes with velcro fasteners for easy management.

  • Look out for bed sores in those who are mainly bed or wheelchair bound. Frequent turning and special cushions for pressure points can help. If in doubt, check with your doctor.

  • Many stroke survivors have problems swallowing their food and drink. The doctor or speech therapist will be able to advise on how to manage meal times safely. Special cutlery is also available to make eating easier.

  • Depression is a common problem among stroke survivors due to the disabilities brought on by the stroke and the need to depend on others for daily activities. Be patient. Encourage independence and provide opportunities for participation in leisure activities.

  • Participate in workshops and forums on stroke to increase your knowledge as well as meet other caregivers. You can also join the Singapore National Stroke Association, a support group for stroke survivors and their caregivers (Visit www.snsa.org.sg or call 6358 4138 for more information).

  • Take care of yourself! Eat well, get enough rest and take time off to do things which you enjoy for e.g. arrange for respite care.
