Mr Chia Soon Keng, 62
Medication: Insulin

Diabetes ran in Mr Chia's family with both of his parents and his elder brother having had the disease. His brother passed away from kidney failure as a result of diabetes and his mother also succumbed to its complications.

Mr Chia was diagnosed with diabetes himself when he was 35 years old. At the time, he was overweight at around 90kg and became aware that something was wrong when he experienced the symptoms of frequent urination and extreme lethargy.

He was hospitalised for infection as a result of the disease in 2001, but it wasn't until his retirement in 2003 that he became more active in the management of his diabetes.
