As part of a strategy to manage chronic diseases in Singapore, HPB will be launching a public education campaign to promote the consumption of whole-grains and whole-grain products for the month of October.
The key message of the campaign, “Eat whole-grains to help protect your health” stems from studies that have shown that consumption of whole-grains can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, the latter having a prevalence rate of 8.2% in Singapore . In addition, whole-grains help in the prevention of weight gain and offer protection against certain types of cancers. To further emphasize the importance of consuming sufficient whole-grains, the healthy diet pyramid would be correspondingly revised under the “Rice and alternative” section to reflect the recommendation.
Gracing the launch on 2 October is a special guest from Harvard School of Public Health, Professor Walter Willett. Professor Willet is Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and a Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Epidemiology. He is a world-renown scientist and nutritionist, who has been involved in numerous key studies and has published extensively in scientific journals.
For the month of the campaign, supermarkets would be featuring a range of products higher in whole-grains. These include foods like brown rice, mixed rice, whole meal breads, whole-grain breakfast cereals, cereal based beverages, whole-grain biscuits and crackers. Some of these products would also be sporting the new HCS logo carrying the nutrient claim “Higher in whole grains”, allowing for easy identification by the public. There will be cooking demonstrations at supermarkets to encourage members of the public to try out whole-grains. Food companies with whole-grain products may wish to approach supermarkets to conduct product demonstrations during the month of the campaign.
