BreastScreen Singapore
BreastScreen Singapore is the national breast cancer screening programme which encourages women aged 50 years and older to go for regular screening mammography (breast x-ray).
Mammograms are offered at subsidised rates of $50 and $75 for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs) respectively (the usual price is $100). This programme aims to detect breast cancer early, allowing more effective treatment and thus reduction in the mortality rate.
The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. If you are aged 40 years and older, you should go for regular screening mammography for early detection of breast cancer.
It is recommended that women should go for regular screening mammography. The Programme recommends the following screening interval if you are aged:
- Between 40 to 49 years old = once every year
- Above 50 years old = once every two years
You are eligible if you:
- are Singaporean or permanent resident
- are aged 40 years and above
- have not gone for mammography in the last 12 */ 24 ** months
- have no breast symptoms such as breast lumps or nipple discharge
- have not been breastfeeding for the past 6 months
You can participate in BreastScreen Singapore by making an appointment for screening mammography at a subsidised rate of $50. You can schedule your appointment at least one week after your period as your breasts will be less tender and sensitive.
