Nutrition Programme

The Nutrition Programme comprises three components, namely Nutrition Standards, Healthy Food Supply and Nutrition Labelling.

Aim of Programme
The aim is to encourage the adoption of healthy dietary practices by Singaporeans, supported by the availability of healthier food and menu choices.

Target Audience
The Programme is targeted at the general public, homemakers, health professionals, nutrition education facilitators, food industries, food importers, wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, caterers and vendors.

Key Strategies
  1. To establish evidence-based dietary standards and develop education tools and messages for use in promoting healthy eating habits,
  2. To promote the availability of a healthy food supply and healthier menu choices, and
  3. To provide nutrition information at the point-of-purchase to enable shoppers to make informed food choices.

Main Activities
Establishment of Nutrition Standards

As part of a larger effort to promote better nutrition among Singaporeans, the Programme aims to set and promote dietary recommendations and to be a focal point for food and nutrition education information. This activity includes establishing and periodically reviewing national dietary recommendations, developing suitable tools to educate different target audiences on nutrition, and organising events to educate the public on healthy eating.

The Programme helps to encourage and enable Singaporeans to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. The nutrition messages are
  1. to eat a diet that is low in fat and saturated fat and
  2. to include
    • six servings of rice and alternatives,
    • two to three servings of meat and alternatives, and
    • two servings each of fruit and vegetables, and
  3. to avoid adding too much salt/sauce/gravy to food.

The team conducting this activity also trains professionals and facilitators on nutrition topics and provides advice on technical and professional matters relating to food and nutrition, on national nutrition and dietary targets and on food and nutrition policies. There is also an up-to-date food composition and nutrition information database.
