severe myopiacomplications

Severe myopia can lead to blindness resulted from:

• Retinal Detachment
• Macular Degeneration
• Cataracts
• Glaucoma

Click on any of the above complications to read more about them.

  Retinal Detachment
•  Retina becomes separated from the eyeball.
•  If left untreated, the condition can lead to blindness.
•  Look out for the sudden appearance of floating black spots or 'falling curtains' of light.

  Macular Degeneration
•  Severe myopia causes degeneration of the retina.
•  If the degeneration occurs at the fovea region, the central vision will be affected.

  Cataracts
•  Is the opacity of the lens and it reduces vision.
•  High myopia is associated with a higher chance of developing cataracts.

  Glaucoma
•  A condition where the pressure in the eye is too high. This high-pressure condition causes damage to the optic nerve and eventually leads to blindness.
•  This condition may not have any symptoms.

If you have myopia, you need to have your eyes examined by qualified optometrists at least once a year to prevent these severe complications. Blindness can be prevented with early detection.
