Scaling New Heights

Colleen from the R&E department (1st from the left) attended an 8-day Technical Mountaineering Course at Mt Cook in New Zealand in December 2004.

This was part of her training for the Mount Everest Climb with the Singapore Women’s Everest Team (SWET 2008).

Colleen shares some of her finest moments here on Voices Reloaded.

A ski plane brought the team to the snowy mountains of New Zealand.

Tunneling into a snow cave.
Tunneling into a snow cave. Imagine staying in there for a night?! Freeeeezing cold…brrr

Drinking snow
Drinking snow!?!

Nature calls...
Your wet stuff goes straight into the glaciers and the dry stuff goes into the bucket which is collected, at regular intervals, to be disposed off away from the mountains.

Thinking about the connection with your water supplies and where your pee goes?

Mmm… so Newater is not so new after all!

In practice

The actual climbing (Mt Aylmer).

Colleen’s personal reflections:

The challenge of mountain climbing is addictive and the scenery is simply awesome! However I would prefer simple trekking, at least not so much gear is involved!

Necessary gear for a successful and safe climb.
