Allan Chan (SS&JC/YHD) says:

AllanI was a teacher for 10 years before I joined HPB in January 2007. I taught in the primary schools and for a short while, I was with the special needs education. In between my stint in the schools, I was with the Ministry of Education for three years, planning the curriculum. If you have children in the primary school, you would have come across their Social Studies books. Yes, those books were written by me!

Chia Yin Keng (Admin/CS) says:

YinkengI was awarded the SAF Adventure Training Award in 1996 for climbing the Island Peak, a 6,189m mountain in the Everest region of Nepal.  The group (11 SAF lady officers) started training about a year before the trip. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience - magnificent close-up views of Mt Everest, experienced challenges in trekking in high altitude, learnt to climb using ice axe, crampons and snow boots, exposed to Nepali culture & food etc.

Jeanette Lim (SHS/YHD) says:

JeanetteI graduated from Nanyang Institute of Management in NITEC in Nursing last year. I wanted to know how HPB promotes healthy lifestyle to the community. After working as an Administrative assistant for a few years, I found that there is not much progress and satisfaction, so I decided to switch careers.

My interest is watching sports programmes on TV, especially on car racing (Formula One) and soccer (English Premier League, FA cup, Champion League, European Championship and World Cup).

Letty Shiu (HLP/YHD) says:

LettyHi! I’m Letty Shiu from Youth Health Division. Nice to meet you all! I’m from Hong Kong and have been in Singapore for a short while. I enjoy all sorts of gastronomical experiences. Eating is not just for nutritional reasons or for pleasure. To me, it is a worldly experience to savour and immerse into the colourful cultures as well as the rich traditions of the many races and religions, particularly here in South East Asia. I enjoy swimming and going for karaoke sessions with friends during my leisure time.

Jin Aizhen (NDRO/R&SP)says:

AizhenI love popular songs, both Chinese and English. I always get refreshed with the radio on. Though I am not young, I am still the fan of project ‘superstar’ :p. I used to play badminton with friends when I was studying in NUS. Here, I hope I can join the HPB badminton group and make some new friends.

I joined HPB in last November. I want to learn as much as I can in NDRO and to become an expert in clinical research.

Kelly Chan (PS&P/YHD) says:

KellyI'm born and raised in Singapore, but have spent 7 years in Australia.  Social service is pretty much in my DNA.  Possess great passion to work with special needs and underprivileged children.  I would adopt all the children on the streets in India if I could!  A true dog lover.  Once upon a time figure skater who unfortunately had to give up the sport when my injuries got the better of me.  Have a great interest in photography, music, travel and food! Truly appreciate great conversations and the exchange of ideas with young children. I am looking forward to my journey here with HPB’s Youth Health Division, to impart invaluable knowledge about health to the students, teachers and parents.

Chia Ee Kang (NMPP/YHD), says:

JustinAbout my family: My family consists of my parents and my sister. My sister is a teacher teaching in one of the primary school. My father is a civil defence officer and my mother is a housewife. I have a dog at home.
For me, I was from the Air Force servicing and repairing aircrafts and joining the healthcare industry is a totally new environment for me. My hobbies include swimming and traveling. I have been to many countries such as Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

About joining HPB: - I joined HPB because I am interested in HPB’s role in the promotion of healthy lifestyles among Singaporeans. The future direction in school health is to reduce the number of diseases among the school-going children.

HPB is a nice organisation as the people I encountered are friendly and approachable.

Dr Wee Moi Kim, (SHS/YHD) says:

Moi KimJoining the School Heath Service of HPB is like coming back to home again.  I was with the School Health Service about 10 years ago and was transferred out after 3 years.  I enjoyed my time here and am very happy to be back here again. When I was in MOH, my son used to ask me whether I am a “real” doctor knowing that I did not see patients.  SHS gives me the opportunity to do some clinical and I can now tell my son I am a “real” doctor.  It was easy for me to fit in - I still see many familiar faces and people are very friendly and warm here.

The Youth Health Division plays a very important role in maintaining good health of our young people.  There is now more focus on health promotion.  Health promotion is never easy and it would be a great challenge to come up with innovative ways to reach out to the youths.  Another challenge for School Health Service is to keep up with changes and ensure that programmes remain relevant and our services are delivered in the most cost effective manner.

Having a full time job and being a full time mother keeps me busy and leaves me little time for any hobby.  During the occasional “spare” time I will watch TV or catch up with my sleep.

Sabrina Choo (R&E/R&SP) says:

SabrinaAfter spending 5 years in teaching, I was looking forward to do something very different - learning new things and experiencing a life outside school. HPB gave me an opportunity to use what I have learnt and offered me an environment to learn much more. I always believe in making contributions to the society, not just monetary. Whatever that I have taken from the society all these years, I hope to return the favour.

I feel really blessed to be in HPB. Actually, I am really overwhelmed by the attention. I have been smiling a year’s worth in this week alone. The working environment in R&E is very comfortable. R&Eians are really patient when it comes to explaining the little details and showing me the ropes. Everyone else has been so friendly, helpful and healthy in every way. After a week in this big family, I am convinced that I have made the right move.

Tok Wei Chiang (SS&JC/YHD) says:

Wei ChiangI joined HPB as I feel that outreach to students will be a very interesting and challenging job. There is a lot to be done in order to get the students in Singapore to lead a healthy lifestyle. The number of students we see at the fast food outlets everyday will give us an idea of the kind of diet the students are having. I believe a lot of these habits are built-up from young. Hence, we not only have to reach out to the students in school, but also to others in the school and the community to promote school health in Singapore in a more holistic approach. This is the current direction we are heading. I foresee that we will continue this approach and we will review and improve our approach in reaching out to more schools in health promotion.

About other comments: - I believe in what the Board is doing in promoting healthy lifestyle in Singapore. Though we may not be able to change every Singaporeans over-night, every Singaporean whom we reached and who changed to a healthier lifestyle would have encouraged us to continue to work hard to create a Healthier Nation.
