That Pillar of Integrity – My Father

What strikes me most about my father is his strong sense of integrity, no matter what the circumstances are.  This virtue, my siblings and I had learnt from him during our teenage years up to adulthood when we started our own families.  And this will be what we will pass on to our kids as well.  Though my dad is not highly educated, he makes sure that the standard of his work and commitment to his family are never compromised.  He brought us up to be God-fearing and lawful citizens of the country.

Education is always the key to a better life – that’s what my dad always impresses upon us.  My dad always made sure that we had the necessary books and stationery for our classes, that our school and tuition fees were promptly paid, and taught us about time management when we did our revisions for exams.

Another aspect of my father that I am very proud of is his love for animals.  I was brought up to care for animals, as we always had pets (ranging from fish to dogs) around the house.  I believe that this love and care for animals brings out the attitude of concern in a person for his/her fellow neighbours, especially in times of crisis.

As Father’s Day approaches this June, I can’t help but reminisce the good times I had spent with my father and the lessons in life that I learnt from him.  This year is especially significant since it is the first anniversary of my mum’s demise.  Therefore, it is high time that my siblings and I provide him with the necessary support and care for his golden years.

My Pa, My Pillar of Strength and Support

Father and daughters share a special bond. This piece has allowed me to reflect on the memories and moments forgotten over time. I realise that where I am right now, is because of the opportunities my dad gave me throughout my life.

Memories and moments which I still cherish are the ones during my childhood. Dad used to take us out for walks, and we would collect earthworms, tadpoles and insects. Then there were the occasional trips to the zoo or Sentosa. Not to forget his attempts at cooking. One of my favourites was when he made kesari (Indian sweet) for the first time. I can still remember the taste.

Always kind, he never refuses anyone who comes to him for advice or help.
The greatest gift he gave me was the opportunity to study abroad. Not only that, he has always encouraged and provided advice whenever needed. I know that, no matter what, I will always have his support and blessings in whatever I undertake.

Thanks Pa, I love you

Remembering  My Dad on Father’s Day

My Dad was the man of my life, from him I drew the source of my strength and wisdom. He was a man whom I had utmost respect. In his qualities, I found my husband.
My Dad left to be with the Lord after his battle with colon cancer in 1986, aged 58. He was an uncomplaining man and his cancer was stage 3 before he was diagnosed. As a doctor, I understood the implications and eased his passing in ways I knew best.

Pay tribute to your father by celebrating Father's Day with him, to show your gratitude for his guidance in your life.
