Looking Back & Moving Foward...

Singapore celebrated its first National Day on 9 August 1966 at the Padang. The main event of the day was a National Day parade involving 23,000 men, women and children. The parade was kept simple without the sophistication of pyrotechnics and mass dance routines. Whatever was lacking was made up for in the excitement and optimism of a people united by a new beginning.

In 1975, the 10th anniversary of Singapore's independence, the parade was decentralised to 13 centres to reach as wide an audience as possible.
In 1976, the National Day Parade was held at the National Stadium for the very first time. Since then, three out of every four National Day parades has been held there. The Padang, being the historic site of the first National Day Parade, now stages the parade once every four years.

Come 2007, the National Day Parade (NDP) will have a new venue - the Marina Bay. It will host the parade for the next three to five years.
A floating platform is being built on the bay near the Esplanade for a spectacular NDP on water.

National Day celebrations today with its roaring RSAF planes, Red Lions parachutists, spectacular performances by local singers, dancers and musicians; everyone has their favourite memory and with each National Day, new memories are created and cherished. The National Day celebrations today are not just about remembering the past and what has been achieved; the parades include celebration of years to come and the future of the nation. In honour of the Singapore’s National Day, don up in red and white colours. Let your hair down and party away!

Here in HPB, let's celebrate Singapore's 42nd Birthday at Garden Terrace from 3-5 pm. Come dressed in red or white (or both) for an afternoon of fun games & performances.

In this issue, our nightingales are up and about. Three of our nurses participated in a musical, many attended the 14th Biennial School Nurses Conference and some are retiring.

1 August was a special day for all of us. It being Nurses Day, Doctors of Youth Health Division recognise the contributions made by the nurses of the field teams and the Student Health Centre. Each and every one of them was given a special gift to remember our appreciation for their contributions.

As many of the nurses were away at the 14th Biennial School Nurses International Conference 2007 from 30 July – 3 August, HPB will be celebrating Nurses Day with a buffet lunch on 8 August 2007, Wednesday from 12.30 to 2 pm at the Function Lounge.

We also hear from our HPBians when they were overseas and not forgetting our HPBians who contributed the best suggestions!

Lastly, not forgetting our animal companions, food reviews, recipes and a contest to win concert tickets!

Happy Reading!
