TSAI QIN WORLD TOUR - 18 August 2007
Flora Bay (HIC, CM & C)
I was among some 6,000 people who went for Tsai Qin’s concert on 18 Aug. She traced the history of “Mandopop” as opposed to “Cantopop” starting from the 1920s-30s Shanghai hits, 1940s-50s Hong Kong hits and 1970s-80s Taiwan hits. She belted out song after song for more than 2 hours. Her powerful voice was breathtaking but her wit and humour was just as entertaining. She has really grown tremendously as a performer for those of you who remember her earlier days with huge glasses and standing perfect still in the middle of the stage while performing. She danced…slow-danced not the hot hip-hop type like Jacky Cheung…and swayed her way through her performance that night. Unfortunately, I felt that it was not one of her better concerts as I had been to her previous concerts which lasted for 4 hours where she proved that she is a diva with a magical voice.

I watched “Tsai Qin World Tour 2007” on Saturday 18th Aug 2007. It was a thoroughly enjoyable concert. Tsai Qin's sensational voice brings back memories of the 50s to 60s era.
Tsai Qin sang her evergreen classic old songs so beautifully that I simply enjoyed every single one of them.
During the performance, a man went up to the stage to present a crystal microphone to Tsai Qin before she sang her fifth song "Three Year" (San Nian in Mandarin) for that night. At that moment, I decided to close my eyes and listened to her rich powerful voice as though she was standing right in front of me performing live and singing my favorite song "Three Years" (San Nian) to me. When I thought about this moment, it was marvellous to me. To date, I still play and keep Tsai Qin unforgettable oldies records and CD's, and listened to them every now and then.

Though the former folk song singer, Tsai Qin is known for evergreen classics, her appeal is cross-generational. Audiences in their 20s and 30s could be spotted when I attended her concert, ‘Endless Love (Bu Liao Qing) World Tour 2007’ at Indoor Stadium on 18 Aug 2007.
The concert was an invaluable discourse on the history of Chinese popular Music. I enjoyed Tsai Qin’s magical and powerful voice when she sang The Three Years (San Nian), Endless Love (Bu Liao Qing), The Last Night (Zui Hou Yi Ye), The Forgotten Times (Bei Yi Wang De Shi Guang) and many other classic songs. At the end of the concert, it was clear the audience (including me) loved her as well as her songs, as many could be seen leaving with satisfied grins on their faces.
Tong An Ge Concert - 8 September 2007

Although they've kept a low profile for the last decade, Tong and Zhou have maintained their much-loved signature singing styles. The flamboyant and still charismatic Tong (with his Korean idol-inspired hair) was the perfect foil to the more sedate Zhou.
The two songwriter-singers limited their movement to the stage but made up for it with the sincerity in their singing. My favourite was their unplugged session, which was simple yet powerful. They strummed and sang together: their old hits, each other's compositions, and songs they had written for others. Their chemistry and friendship made the night warm and intimate.
It was comforting to hear the songs we had forgotten, if not for this night. Even without stunning special effects or any minute form of dancing, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

It was a no-frills concert by two talented song writers who play the guitar very well. Both are not exceptionally popular signers as a lot of songs were written by them for other singers. There wasn’t any extravagant costumes, no dancers, no spectacular lighting, or fancy dance moves. The audience were treated to a good old fashioned concert and heartfelt singing. Overall it was an enjoyable evening.

It was a 2 hours of reminiscence of the good old heartfelt songs. However, there are no fanciful outfits or spectacular stunts. Without any special highlight, the two singers complemented each other very well. They brought us back to the good old days with their passion in singing and well played guitars. Although more were expected from the concert, overall it was a comforting and relaxing evening.

It's interesting to hear them sing each other's compositions and to sing them so well. They have great chemistry. It was a worthy concert which was sincerely delivered.

The concert was like a field trip back in time, as it was the songs of these 2 balladeers that helped me get through those nights when me and my classmates had to cram for exams! Zhou's voice was mellifluous as ever, and Angus still cuts a suave figure, albeit abit older and rougher around the edges. I had a wonderful time revisiting my schoolgirl past. Thanks Voices!
