A personal snapshot of HPB's new Chief Information Officer (CIO)

- by Norman Chong

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is a job designation commonly given to someone responsible for the information technology and systems that support the organisation's goals.  As information technology and systems have increasingly become more important, the CIO has been viewed to have a strategic role in many organisations.  Meet Ms Low Sau Chan, HPB's new Chief Information Officer.

You joined HPB part time in June 2006, and later became a full timer here in July 2007.  How do you find your working life in HPB compared to your previous job at IDA? Any culture shock?

Any culture shock? My IDA's office was in Suntec.  My room was at the mid-floor with a breathtaking sea view, spanking new and modern facilities.  But other than that, life in HPB is just as busy as when I was at IDA.  The only difference is now I work with a different domain and type of professionals.  I have also become more health conscious since joining HPB.

Please tell us what is your mission at HPB.

To summarise in a few words, we (together with my colleagues) would like to see ourselves as "Change Agents" with IT as an enabler.  We need to continuously work very closely with everyone in HPB to identify areas where IT can help us do our job better.

I hear that you have a passion for Yoga.  What got you started on it?  What do you like most about it?

I keep hearing about the good things of Yoga.  And true enough, I find it very useful.  Especially after each session, I find myself sleeping very well.

Does Yoga help you in your life and work?

Yes, it does.  I try to practice some of the teachings of yoga whenever I'm stressed.  It helps me to calm down and have a clearer frame of mind.

I hear that you have woken up as early as 5am to do walking exercises.  Pls share your experience.

No lah, not often, only at times when I can't sleep well. (smile)

What else do you like to do in your spare time?

I'm a typical Singaporean.  I like to catch the latest movies and the occasional shopping.

If you won $1 million dollars, what will you do?

Sorry, I don't buy ToTo/4-D.  No chance to win and in any case I don't believe I have such luck.
