Child Safety Topics > Choking

Many infants and children die each year from choking. Accidental choking deaths usually occur in children under the age of five and the majority of them are under the age of two. Children at this age have a natural tendency to put things into their mouths. To prevent children from getting choked, here are some pointers:

  • Keep all small objects such as buttons, coins, pins, marbles etc out of reach of children. They may put them into their mouths and get choked.

  • Children should only play with age appropriate toys to ensure that they do not swallow and choke on small or detachable pieces.

  • Do not feed babies when they are crying or lying flat. They may get choked on their food if fed this way.

  • Make sure that food does not contain fish or chicken bones when fed to children.

  • Round or smooth food items like fish balls, grapes and cocktail sausages should be cut into smaller pieces when fed to children.

  • Remind your children not to play, talk or laugh while eating.
