Child Safety Topics > Falls

Young children are most vulnerable to injuries, including falls at home. Falls can result in serious injuries and are sometimes even fatal. Fortunately, most falls can be prevented. Here are some pointers to help you protect your child from falls:

  • Do not leave babies alone on tables, sofas or beds. They may roll over and fall off.

  • Avoid highly polished floors. Toddlers may slip and fall. Do not let your child walk or run about while still wearing socks.

  • If you use mats, always make sure they are the non-slip ones.

  • All high-rise flats should have sturdy grilles installed properly on the windows. Keep the grilles locked and put the keys out of the reach of your child.

  • Ensure that the floor is free from grease, water or soap by wiping up spilt liquids immediately. Otherwise, your child may slip and fall.

  • Arrange your furniture to make it difficult for your child to climb onto higher places. Children below the age of seven should not sleep on double-decker beds.

  • Children should not play along the corridor of a high-rise flat. Even at the playground, always keep an eye on your child. He or she may climb up structures like the monkey bar unsupervised and risk falling to the ground.

  • Avoid using sarong cradles. Babies can fall out of them and be seriously hurt.

  • Baby walkers can result in falls. Use a play pen instead.

If you are not the one looking after your child, do instruct your caregiver to observe these safety tips.
