Home > Eye Care > Childhood Myopia: The Role of Parents

Current studies have shown that the onset and development of myopia is highest among children of school-going age. While genes may play a part, environmental factors such as the amount of time children spend on near work activities like reading, working or playing on computers and handheld games play a role in myopia development and progression.

As parents, you play an important role in helping to prevent the onset or progression of myopia in your child’s life. Even if your child has no myopia, cultivate some good eye care practices by encouraging your child to spend time daily on outdoor activities and reduce that spent on unnecessary near work. If your child has myopia, you can still help  slow down the progression of his/her condition by adopting good eye care practices, and  by taking your child for regular eye checks at least once a year.
