| Accommodation |
|
It
is the eye's ability to adjust focus of the lens on objects
at varying distances. |
| Amblyopia |
|
Also
known as “lazy eye”. It is a reduction of visual
acuity due to interruption of normal visual development during
the sensitive period in childhood, in an otherwise apparently
healthy eye. It can result in a great difference in the degree
of visual acuity between the two eyes. |
| Astigmatism |
|
An eye
condition in which vision at all distances may be distorted
due to irregularity in the shape of the front surface (cornea)
of the eye. |
| Cataracts |
|
An eye
condition where there is clouding of the lens limiting vision. |
| Cornea |
|
It is the
transparent front covering of the eye. |
| Glaucoma |
|
An eye
condition where the fluid pressure within the eye rises because
of slowed fluid drainage from the eye. |
| Lens |
|
It is an
oval transparent structure at the front of the eye which focuses
light rays to form a sharp image on the retina. |
| Macular
degeneration |
|
An eye
condition where a part of the retina degenerates affecting the
central vision. |
| Myopia |
|
Also known
as “Short-sightedness”. It is a condition where
near objects are seen clearly but distant objects appear blurred.
It can occur when the eyeball is longer than normal. |
| Near work |
|
It is a
term used to describe visual activities performed at close distance,
say within an arm’s length, or when a person looks at
or needs to focus on fine details of an object. Examples are
writing, reading, using the computer or doing handicraft work. |
| Pseudomyopia |
|
Also known
as “false myopia”. It occur when there is excessive
accommodation which may be associated with prolonged periods
of near work. When that happens, the person may appear to be
myopic. |
| Retina |
|
It is the
light sensitive layer at the inside of the eye. It senses and
converts light to nerve signals. These signals are passed to
the brain. |
| Retinal
detachment |
|
A condition
where the retina becomes separated from the eyeball. This can
occur in various conditions like severe trauma to the eye or
severe myopia. |
