Complications of severe myopia can include:

Retinal detachment

  • Happens when the retina becomes separated from the eyeball. This is a medical emergency as it can lead to blindness.

Glaucoma

  • Associated with increased fluid pressure within the eyeball that could lead to blindness if untreated.

Macular degeneration

  • Results from severe myopia where the central part of the retina that gives the clearest vision degenerates.

Amblyopia or "Lazy Eye"

  • Reduced vision in an eye that did not develop normal vision during early childhood due to a big difference in the degree of myopia between the two eyes. To prevent blurred vision, the brain interprets the image from the "stronger" eye and not the image from the "weaker" eye. As a result, the "weaker" eye does not develop vision properly and may never see well. There are many causes for amblyopia and severe myopia may be one of them.

Cataract

  • The clouding of the lens in the eye causing blurred vision.
