About the Collaborating Centre

WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention

HPB was designated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in January 2007 for a period of 4 years. The Collaborating Centre comes under the purview of the Strategic Planning & Collaborations Department. .

The Collaborating Centre will work towards positioning itself as a centre of excellence for health promotion through collaboration and information exchange with WHO member countries in the Western Pacific Region.

Inter-regional collaboration and information exchange would be strengthened through:
  1. Sharing of best practices in School Health Promotion and Workplace Health Promotion
  2. Providing Short-term Consultancies
  3. Organising/participating in WHO Regional Meetings, Training Programmes & Workshops
  4. Accepting WHO Fellowships & Attachments

Terms of Reference

  1. Collaborate with WHO to strengthen the capacity of health promotion practitioners in the region to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion interventions in support of WHO’s Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.
  2. Collaborate with WHO to strengthen setting-based approaches and develop best practices to promote the health and well-being of school children, youth, adult and older persons.
  3. Develop and offer training programmes in Workplace Health Promotion to strengthen capacity and also to create opportunities for the exchange of experiences among member countries.
  4. Collaborate with WHO in the collection, collation and dissemination of publications on Best Practices on Health Promoting Schools and Workplace Health Promotion and linking the publications to the existing WHO website.
  5. Share with the region the determinants of health and evidence-based strategies of HPB’s health promotion programmes, e.g. smoking, obesity and mental health.

“WHO Awards for Healthy Cities 2008 - Good Practice Award for Comprehensive Tobacco Control in Cities using the MPOWER Package”Awards

HPB won the "WHO Awards for Healthy Cities 2008 - Good Practice Award for Comprehensive Tobacco Control in Cities using the MPOWER Package".

The award is given out to cities with outstanding practices and innovative, successful approaches to comprehensive tobacco control demonstrating action on three or more of the six effective strategies in the MPOWER Package.
