Health Promotion Board launches retrospective and contests
to mark anniversary of health promotion
Do you remember brushing your teeth while squatting next to a drain in school? Learning about proper nutrition for yourself and your family from a Maternal and Child Health nurse? How about doing the Great Singapore Workout? The Health Promotion Board (HPB) is revisiting these memories and more in an online retrospective that celebrates 50 years of health promotion in Singapore.
50 Strong Years
2 The retrospective at www.50strongyears.sg highlights key milestones in public health. The public will be able to learn about important developments in health promotion and enjoy photographs depicting scenes of public health in Singapore dating back to the 1960s. Veterans from the medical, nursing and administrative fields will also share their insights and experiences in an online video.
3 Singapore s health landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation in the years since the nation was granted self-government. As the nation s foremost advocate for health, it is fitting that we lead the way in looking back at the history of health promotion and disease prevention in Singapore. Learning from the past paves the way for greater progress in improving the health of every Singaporean, said Mr Lam Pin Woon, Chief Executive Officer of HPB.
Photograph contest
4 The public is invited to submit old photographs with captions that document events in public health and health promotion in the last 50 years, from 13 to 27 July 2009. Sample photographs are attached with this media release for publication. Please refer to Annex A for captions.
5 Contest submissions will be published on the 50 Strong Years website, and the public can vote for their favourites. The submissions will also be evaluated by a judging panel, and winners will be selected based on a combination of votes and the judges decision. Contestants and voters stand to win Samsung LCD TVs, Apple iPod products and shopping vouchers. Minister for Health Mr Khaw Boon Wan will present prizes to winners during HPB s National Day Observance Ceremony on 31 July 2009 at HPB.
