Singapore, 2 December 2011: This Sunday, 4 December 2011, the South West Community Development Council (CDC), in collaboration with the Health Promotion Board (HPB), will roll out the first of its series of roving Healthy Living @ South West roadshows, which will provide community functional screening and on-site follow-up for 2,000 elderly residents in the South West district over three years. Together with other community partners, the CDC aims to create a health-promoting ecosystem and enhance the overall health of its residents.
2. Mayor Khor said, “There are currently a couple of hindrances when it comes to health screening for the elderly that needs to be addressed. First, it is the lack of screening for functional decline. Second, it is the need for followup”. To provide functional screening, Mayor Khor added, “HPB and South West CDC are launching the Community Functional Screening and On-site Follow-up Programme that offers screening for physical function, vision, hearing, mood, oral health and continence”.
3. “To complement the functional screening, HPB formed a network of 19 medical GP clinics and eight dental clinics in and around Hong Kah North to provide convenient and accessible follow-up for the seniors,” said Mr Ang Hak Seng, Chief Executive Officer, HPB.
4. HPB has also garnered the support of the Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association (SATA), Tzu Chi Free Clinic, Singapore Action Group for Elders (SAGE), Singapore Optometric Association (SOA), Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) and Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) to provide a comprehensive suite of health services at the screening site.
5. Mayor Khor added, “Apart from the functional screening and on-site follow-up for the seniors, we have also launched the first „Healthy Together RC Corner‟ in Hong Kah North Zone 6. This corner will provide a convenient hub for residents to access information and advice from healthcare professionals and Health Ambassadors. Activities like health talks, exercise groups, cooking demonstrations and other interest groups will also be a regular feature at this corner. This will help residents from all walks of life and across all ages increase their awareness of our healthcare system, health issues and be inspired to lead healthy lifestyles. The CDC will set aside $500,000 over the next three years to support the setup of such 'Healthy Together RC Corner' in the district”.
6. Also happening at the event will be the celebration of the Fifth Anniversary of the Fun Walkers @ South West, in recognition of the residents‟ efforts in promoting good health to the community. To date, Fun Walkers @ South West has almost 13,000 members in the district, brisk walking on an average of once a month.
