YAH calls on youths to see beyond the face of HIV/AIDS and feel the heart of the people living with it
Open Your Heart a call to youths to see beyond the face of HIV/AIDS, is an event supported by the Youth Advolution for Health (YAH) which will feature a short film and a photo exhibition developed by a group of youth volunteers who have banded together in an effort to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and its social implications. Open Your Heart runs from Friday, 28 March 2008 to Sunday, 30 March 2008
Open Your Heart features a short film called August 29, which tells a poignant love story of James, a photographer, who re-kindles a love previously lost years ago with his former girlfriend Andrea, only to find out that she is dying from AIDS. Not giving up on Andrea and their relationship, James agrees, at Andrea s urging, to chronicle her life, their relationship, her battle with AIDS and finally her death. Through these photographs, Andrea hopes to show people the consequences of her choices .
Accompanying August 29 is a photo exhibition featuring artistically photographed scenes from the Patient Care Centre at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and several conceptual photographs that convey the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS such as stigmitisation, the dangers of the disease and the importance of protection. The underlying theme of the film and the photo exhibition is the human heart behind the disease.
Another highlight of Open Your Heart is the Love +ve photo competition award ceremony. Between 22 February 2008 and 19 March 2008, photography enthusiasts submitted their best depictions of love and its connection with HIV/AIDS for the Love +ve photo competition. The 20 finalists will be revealed at the launch of Open Your Heart on Friday, 28 March 2008 with their photographs being displayed at the event. SMS lines will be opened for the public to vote for their favourites. Two winners will be announced on Sunday, 30 March 2008 the winner of the Judges Choice, and the entry with the most number of SMS votes.
Through the screening of the film, the photo exhibition, the Love +ve photo competition and other activities, Open Your Heart hopes to encourage youths to open their hearts and empathise with people living with HIV/AIDS, and the best way to do so is to be educated about the infection and how it is transmitted. Only by dispelling the stigma pegged to HIV/AIDS can people better understand and fight the disease, not the people living with it.
