For the first time in Singapore, a rock concert will be held to commemorate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) on 31 May. The concert will be a highlight of the Rockin Without Smokin event, a culmination of this year s month-long National Smoking Control Campaign (NSCC).
2 The three day event, held from 29 31 May 2009, aims to highlight the benefits of adopting a smoke-free lifestyle and will see extensive youth involvement, mainly from the Youth Advolution for Health (YAH) Programme.
3 Rockin Without Smokin will feature a myriad of activities that highlight the benefits of living it up without lighting up , the slogan for this year s NSCC. Highlights include the Live It Up Without Lighting Up Rock Concert, Hip Hop Dance Competition, Campus Rap Off Competition, Guitar Hero Competition as well as the Journey of Truth, an experiential exhibition. More information on the highlights of Rockin Without Smokin is attached at Annex A.
4 The event will culminate with a Rock Concert, which will be launched by Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Health, Mr Khaw Boon Wan. Local smoke-free bands such as Sixx, FireFight, and Rockstar Lullaby, as well as Jonathon Chan, frontman of Plain Sunset will be featured. MediaCorp artistes Felicia Chin and Elvin Ng will also grace the event and lend their voice to the call to Live It Up Without Lighting Up .
Combating smoking among youth and young adults
5 Addressing smoking prevalence has always been a key priority and challenge for the Health Promotion Board (HPB). HPB, through its National Smoking Control Programme (NSCP) which started in 1986, adopts a multi-pronged strategy that includes taxation, legislation, public education, collaborative partnerships and provision of smoking cessation services to combat smoking by reducing the supply of and demand for tobacco.
6 Initiatives targeted at youth and young adults aim to:
Prevent the experimentation and initiation of smoking
Promote a smoke-free lifestyle as the preferred norm
Encourage youth and young adult smokers to quit
Equip non-smokers with skills and strategies to help friends/loved ones kick the habit
7 One of the strategies aimed at preventing youth uptake of smoking is the use of graphic warning labels. HPB s efforts in this area have gained worldwide recognition. It has just been awarded the World No Tobacco Day 2009 Award by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its strategy to reduce smoking prevalence through the effective use of labeling, packaging and the use of graphic health warnings on tobacco products.
