YOUTHS SHOP THEIR WAY TO 60 MINUTES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
45 teams of 13 to 18-year-olds will create an unusual sight by racing through a mall to complete a shopping mission filled with exciting and fun-filled physical activity challenges at the Health Promotion Board (HPB) s Shopathon 2010 this Saturday, 13 March 2010, at Bugis Junction.
2 This event is part of the Exercise Your Way physical activity campaign targeted at youths. It seeks to reinforce their awareness of the physical activity guideline 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every day on 5 or more days a week and motivate them to make physical activity a part of their daily routine. The campaign also highlights to youths that they can tap on their creativity and transform every day activities into opportunities to be active.
3 The campaign was launched with a series of online viral videos which seeded ideas on how youths can use simple things such as newspapers and engage in a soccer game with their friends. Over the last two weekends, these creative games were brought to Orchard Road for the youths to have a hands-on experience of the fun and excitement of being active. In some schools, the Health Promotion Board also introduced BodyJam which incorporated grooving dance moves and a zest of energy to engage the youths in a workout routine. The campaign will culminate with a video competition in April 2010 where youths will be invited to submit entries showcasing how they have been exercising their way and adopting an active lifestyle.
4 We hope that this campaign and event will encourage youth to think of creative ways to fit exercise into their daily lives. This will help them reap the benefits of regular physical activity and motivate them to sustain such active lifestyles in adulthood, said Dr Wong Mun Loke, Deputy Director, Youth Health Programme Development (1), Youth Health Division, HPB.
5 Local MediaCorp artiste Michelle Chia will engage in various stage activities such as rolled-up paper chapteh with the youths. A competition called Reinvent Physical Activity will also encourage youths to use everyday objects such as newspapers to create exciting and innovative physical activities in which they can take part in
6 The event will also feature other games, competitions and sports demonstrations for the youths to participate in. These include a Mass BodyJam workout, basketball challenge, hula hoop competitions as well as skipping and hip-hop performances. Youths will also be able to vote for their favourite Shopathon contestants who will model indoor, beach and outdoor sports wear. Local radio personalities Dan and Young will also be there to entertain the youths and share tips on how to make physical activity a part of daily living.
